Our attorneys are investigating Fosamax because of its dangerous and serious side effects. Merck received FDA approval for Fosamax for treatment of osteoporosis, but also for other indications, such as additional bone diseases like Paget’s disease. Fosamax is also prescribed for cancer patients to prevent bone fractures caused by bone metastases.

Rare Femur Fractures From Fosamax

The FDA warned in October of 2010 that Fosamax as well as Fosamax plus D, which administered for treatment of osteoporosis, had been associated to two rare kinds of femur fractures, which are called diaphyseal and subtrochanteric femur fractures. The normal subtrochanteric femur break would be a fracture of the bone right below the joint of the hip.

Femur fractures that are diaphyseal fractures occur below the hip joint, in the elongated portion of the thigh, at some point below the hip joint and extending down to just above the knee. These types of fractures are extremely rare and account for BELOW ONE PERCENT of femur and hip fractures overall. FDA officials stated that the rare femur fractures were predominantly discovered in those patients who were taking bisphosphonates, and Fosamax in particular. The Food & Drug Administration mandated that Fosamax makers include information in the Warning & Precautions section of the products’ labels about possible links between these atypical femur and thigh fractures and the use of bisphosphonates.
