Vioxx is used as a treatment for osteoarthritis, menstrual pain and acute pain management of acute pain in adults. Vioxx, the trade name of the generic drug rofecoxib, was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in May 1999, for the treatment of osteoarthritis, menstrual pain and the management of acute pain in adults. It is manufactured by Merck & Co. (Merck) and is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Vioxx does not cure any of the above conditions, and only helps address their symptoms. Merck voluntarily recalled Vioxx in 2004 after research findings indicated patients taking Vioxx for eighteen months double their risk of suffering from a serious heart attack or stroke.

Vioxx Side EffectsEven though steroids are considered secure for brief use to reduce inflammation, when taken for longer periods they can cause serious side effects such as weight gain, fluid retention often visible in the face, sudden mood swings, muscle weakness, blurry vision, increased body hair, osteoporosis (bone weakening), high blood pressure, stomach irritation, and/or glaucoma.
