Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormone Replacement Therapy drugs are used to treat postmenopausal side-effects in women. HRT drugs such as Prempro have been linked to severe side-effects such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer, blood clots, stroke and heart attacks. In 2001 over 22 million prescriptions for Prempro were written to treat postmenopausal side-effects women.

Often HRT is also used for women who have experienced surgical menopause brought on by an ovarohysterectomy, the removal of the ovaries and uterus. Surgical menopause results in a more sudden drop in all female sexual hormone levels than that which occurs with natural menopause. For years doctors have prescribed artificial hormones based on the assumption that the artificial increase in hormone levels can alleviate discomfort and other the side effects of the decreased levels of hormones.

While hormone replacement therapy has certain benefits, recent clinical studies have shown the treatment is associated with a significantly increased risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer and uterine cancer. HRT can also cause heart attacks, strokes, asthma, blood clots in the lungs and legs, dementia, and immune system disorders such as lupus.
