Fosamax

Drug Capsule ImageFosamax is included in a group of pharmaceutical drugs called bisphosphonates, designed to reduce the cell activity associated with bone deterioration. The drug was approved by the FDA in 1999 as a treatment for osteoporosis. An estimated 22.4 million prescriptions were written to men and women last year.

Side Effects of Fosamax

  • Gastrointestinal distress including nausea, stomach pain and constipation.
  • Osteonecrosis of the jaw with severe pain or inflammation, loss of function, and disfigurement. Osteonecrosis can severely affect the ability to speak, eat or swallow.

Recent studies have associated Fosamax with the development of Osteonecrosis of the jaw, or ONJ. Osteonecrosis, also known as ''bone death,'' is the destruction of bone tissue that frequently leads to infection or fractures. Unlike other cases, Osteonecrosis of the jaw is not common in the greater part of the population. Osteonecrosis, which is the signature disease caused by Fosamax, has been a major factor in cases brought against the drug.
